Adoption FAQS

How much are the adoption fees?

For Senior and Disabled Citizens, we offer a $50 discount on adoption fees for dogs 6 months and older. (No discounts on puppies under 6 months.)

What does the adoption fee include?

Why aren't the dogs free?
Pets are not free for anyone. For owners they require a financial commitment for supplies, veterinary care, grooming, etc. It is not free for animal shelters to care for them either. The average expense to a shelter to save one dog is anywhere between $500-$1,000 per dog depending on the shelter’s resources. To keep our adoption fees affordable, our operating expenses are subsidized by donations, fundraisers, grants and our professional grooming services.

We encourage new owners to properly prepare themselves for the costs of owning a pet. Please keep in mind that the yearly average for dog ownership is between $1,100-$3,500 on up. This is largely affected by the age, type and size of the dog. Making sure that you are financially stable to care for a pet should weigh heavily in your decision to add one to your family.

What kinds of dogs do you have and why?
Every week, Animal House rescues wonderful adoptable dogs/puppies of all breeds, sizes and ages. There are millions of pets that are homeless by no fault of their own. Record numbers of people are losing their jobs, homes, and lifestyles. This combined with the already existing pet over-population problem has greatly increased the number of pets in shelters. Today’s typical shelter dog is yesterday’s loving dog next door.

By adopting from a shelter, you are truly saving a life and making room for another one to be saved.

What is Animal House’s adoption process?
Every shelter has its own policies for approving adoptions. Our adoption screening process is designed to ensure that each animal is placed with a responsible person; someone who is prepared to make a lifelong commitment. An important part of the adoption process is matching the life-style and needs of the adopter with the personality and needs of the individual dog.  Our goal is to provide the owner and animal with a mutually beneficial lifelong match.

Animal House has a never ending commitment to every dog that comes through our doors. That commitment is also extended to whomever the animal finds it’s forever home with. Whether it has been 7 days or 7 years from adoption we are here to help you and your Animal House Alum.

We have dogs both in the shelter and in foster care.

To see a dog that is currently in the shelter, please stop in to meet him/her along with your completed application at which time you can place a hold and set up an adoption time.

If the dog is in foster care (as indicated in profile), please submit your application and our staff will schedule a meet and greet with you and the foster home as soon as possible (usually within 1-2 days).

If you are interested in adopting a dog and we don't currently have what you are looking for, we recommend filling out and submitting an application for pre-approval. We will keep your approved application on file for 30 days (unless otherwise requested) so that you have time to find the right dog.

We do not ship dogs.  You are required to come meet your new addition prior to adoption so that we can ensure a good match.

I have another dog or cat, how do I know if they will get along?
Choosing a new dog is important for all members of the family, especially the furry ones. At Animal House, we strongly encourage you to bring your current dog(s) with you for a meet and greet. Many times, it’s your dog that chooses the new family member and gives their final approval.

Have a cat? Let us know if you have a resident kitty and we can let you know who likes them and who may not.
